Updates & Happenings

7/7/08 -
Another nice slug of entries in the Single Speed Gallery Section - this is a pretty diverse group, with another in the growing bunch of "multi-gear" singlespeeds.

A Word On Updates:
If you have sent in updated photos for an earlier entry to the Galleries, hang in there - I was tossing them all in a file to "get back to" and was embarrassed to see how long I let things stew... Ooops! Funny how work and life get in the way sometimes. The good news is that I'll be chipping away at those during this week. Thanks again for keeping things up to date!

Other Updates -
Uploaded Rivendell Rambouillet model page. Also scanned in an article about Rivendell published in the old California Bicyclist Magazine back in 1995.

A few people have indicated that they'd rather not have a link to the their email address in their gallery page. That can certainly be arranged, and I'd updated the FAQ section earlier this year to reflect that.

The default is that I include it, but other options are available More here.

Sheldon Brown - 1944 - 2008

Rivendell just posted the interview they did with him in RR25 a few years ago. All across the net, memorials are blooming and recollections shared. We owe him a debt of gratitude and should feel lucky to have enjoyed his precense. His family have now posted information for memorial gifts. There have been a few reports of Sheldon Brown Memorial Rides which took place on April 1st, which was Sheldon's day of product prankery. Harris Cyclery has managed to act as a KOF for this year's offering.

I'm currently out of size LARGE shirts for the One Cog T-shirts. They got really popular in the last month (must be long-sleeve weather...) I will be doing another run, but will be shipping them to those who have backorders first - Thanks for your orders!

Recently, I've been reading my blog favorites via Bloglines - at the recommendation of alex w. Bloglines lets you easily aggregate feeds to one handy page. It also quickly generates a button for people to subscribe to your feed - You know what's next...

here's mine:

The Rivendell Website just got a big helping of speed, moving to a server which will handle things better. Check it out - it moves right along now. Of course, I'll continue with the Cyclofiend RBW Page with new stuff and web sightings.

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to send in all the photos and descriptions - it wouldn't be possible without your efforts!

Slightly Older News -

Rivendell Owners Bunch
After the bikelist.org RBW email list has ceased, I've decided to admin a RBW Owners Bunch email list via Google Groups. More info on the RBW page.

2007 NAHBS
Photos, Videos, Reports & such

Most of the links and photos have been aggregated from the 2007 North American Handmade Bicycle Show in San Jose. I messed around a little with my new video camera, so there's some jerky, noisy footage if you follow the links here. Did manage to get a short interview with Tony from Pereira cycles. In short - what a great show!

While I'm Thinkin' About It...
Riding partner and Master of the Useful Hack JimG has started an interesting thread on his blog, called "Chameleon Bikes," showcasing bikes that can adapt across a range of uses. Of course, I'm biased because he was kind enough to put my Quickbeam in there, but you should check it out and send him some photos while you're at it. JimG also recently added an "Unofficial Kogswell Page", similar to the Rivendell Page found here.

Thanks for your support!
I want to thank those of you who have taken the time to support the site through your donations. As the word has gotten out about the Galleries, my bandwidth usage has grown noticeably, and I've had to upgrade the server package to stay ahead of it. Even a few bucks through the Donation button below helps out. Thanks too for your emails - I appreciate all your kind words about the site.

Random Photos Hint:
If there is a bicycle you see in the random photos at the top of this page, you can either <control>+click (mac) or right-click (windows) and "View Image". The name of the image should appear in the address window of your browser. The number which appears before the ".jpg" extension is the number of the bicycle in that gallery. For example, if you see 22.jpg, then that is the image for #22. You should be able to find that bicycle reasonably quickly. Yes - I know it's a work-around, but it's the best I've got right now... UPDATE FOR 2007! Current Classics and Single Speed Galleries now have Thumbnail Preview Pages, where I've aggregated the images.

Next project is to see if this bulletin board module will be reasonably spam-resistant. The last one I messed with was significantly porous.

'm always looking for Ibis Catalogs or scans to fill in the missing years in the Ibis section - that means the complete stuff from 1996, and the years from 1990 to 1993. as well . Early items appreciated, and if you own a time machine, please go back and tell me not to toss out the Fat Tire Flyers when I was moving...

Workshops of the iBobs
A post on the iBob List prompted this little gallery. Want to show off your tool board? Check out how other iBobs deal with a 6 foot ceiling? This is the place!

Classics Gallery
What an interesting selection of styles and rides. Thanks to all who have contributed photos and those who have helped defray expenses by their donation. I've also set up a page-in-progress which organizes the Current Classics by Maker. There's also a photo page for the Rivendell Bleriot - a QBP distributed 650B bicycle which really looks stunning.

Cyclocross Gallery
Updates in the CX News Section - including an update on the fundraising auction to help send Barb Howe to CX Nats. Check it out! Me? Haven't gotten a race in this year - Yes, I'm still cranky that my hip has only just healing and my cranks are just back from being "na remont"...

Single Speed Gallery
It's interesting how many of the bicycles so are are actually single speed roadsters - I thought that most would be mtb's, but one-geared coastables seem reasonably popular on the roadways! It seems that all of a sudden, Quickbeams are beginning to take over.

Working Bikes & Practical Hardware
This section had been dormant and waiting for more photos. But, some folks on the iBob and RBW list were chatting about fenders, and wanted a place to post photos and such. They seemed to go together. Take a photo of bicycles which are used for everyday tasks and send it in!

Gallery FAQ page
The gallery needs your photos - yes, they are good enough and doggone it, people like them! If you don't understand the whole "Current Classics", "Cross Bike", "Single Speed" or "Working Bike" Gallery thing, start here. It also has a few suggestions regarding photographing your bicycle

Cyclofiend Blog
Most of my bike-centric natterings tend to show up on the iBob list or the RBW Onwer's Bunch Group, so the blog tends to some ride reports, gear reapir details, other thoughts and musings, more nattering about projects and gear, some stuff that is decidedly non-cycling like dogs, orchids and the ongoing record of music which pops into my head while riding.

Ibis Bicycles
After some discussions on the iBob list regarding model years, I started working on a reference page for Ibis Bicycles - which contains scans of catalogs and other stuff which came from The World According to Chuck Ibis. Last Addition: Cousin It & Touche Tandem catalog scans from 94/95.

I've also added a couple of pages to the riding notes section. It's not much to speak of yet.

Thanks to everyone for their kinds words of encouragement - this is great fun!

Keep those photos coming!

PS - I may not keep this on the site, but check out th "Ow!" section... It's not quite what you'd thnk.

Photos From the 2006 Show!

3rd Annual North American Hand Made Bicycle Show

From the Official Site:

"A handmade bicycle is the finest kind of 2-wheeled vehicle you can own, made by a craftsman who has carefully chosen the very best materials and molded them into a bicycle especially for you. Framebuilders start as apprentices, perfecting their skills, evaluating materials, tubing and construction, and developing their own style. Our mission for the North American Handmade Bicycle Show is a simple one: to showcase the talents of the best builders of handmade bicycle frames in the world. Whether they are well known or unknown, no matter the material of choice, these artisans have learned and mastered their craft to the point of making ride-able art forms of the greatest invention ever, the bicycle. Come and meet the artists behind the design and creation of handmade bicycles, ask them questions, and pick the one you want to take home! "
