Seattle
Fire Department/Medic One has used EMS bicycles for about ten years
now. Operating in pairs, they carry full Advanced Life Support capabilities
including defibrillator, IV/cardiac drugs, airway management and
wound care equipment, about 25 lbs on each bike.
Bikes
serve large public gatherings where access for motor vehicles is
problematic, including all Mariner and Seahawk games, Seafair and
Bumbershoot festivals, the Seattle Marathon, fireworks shows and
public gatherings (WTO).
The
bikes are rather generic aluminum mountain bikes with LX kit. Double
leg kickstands, Ortlieb bags, and a specially designed rack for
the defibrillator. Functional if not elegant, the bikes are a great
ice breaker with kids and the public in general.
