State of the Rivendell Bicycle Works Owner's Bunch Mailing List
============================
November 2008 - #7
============================

I might have mixed feelings this time of year. It mostly would have to do with the geographic spread of this diverse set of individuals who have chosen to share in this conversation on the list.

Sometimes, I feel bad writing about local rides when some folks are hunkering down for winter. Being in the SF Bay Area, we are blessed with varied topography and reasonably mild conditions. Hopefully no one will mistake an exuberant mid-December ride report by someone in warmer climes as some sort of "nyah-nyah!" comment.

But, honestly, among this list I doubt that will be an issue. It's been a pleasure to watch this group grow (pushing 800 now!) and yet still maintain the civility and respect which we need to continue this adventure.

Although, honestly, I really am envious of all's y'all's basements. It'd sure make winter projects easier. California is all about carports and single level homes... But, I digress.

I really enjoy the fact that we've achieved a decent momentum. New topics crop up and newer members contribute in greater numbers. All vital to keep a group vital and interesting. Keep it up! It is important as we grow to honor the relatively narrow scope of this list. As I've said before, letting discussions end as they creep toward more general topics, not having to have the last comment (or needing to "win" the argument) and, above all, maintaining the respect for one another within the group is what makes this list special.

And as always, thanks again for contributing to or simply enjoying the discussions.

Projects and Features
============================

Not too much new on this front right now - I was hoping to get across the bay to snap some pix of the new models, but time and commitments have not allowed so far. Nevertheless, a couple things:

--

RBW List Innards -
There are a few things which I've thought about a bit, and tried to be more consistent about over the last couple months.

- Posts from New Members are still moderated, as before. But, if someone's first post is a "For Sale" listing, I've been waiting until they begin contributing to the list before changing them to unmoderated.

- I try to pass moderated posts through the same day. I'll usually check once a day from work as well as when I'm home.

- People who contribute and respect the other members of this community probably get a little more leeway if they post "For Sale" listings that are a bit less-rivendellish.

In other words, if your first post to the list is about a non-Rivendell company, or something that has nothing to do with the the stated list purpose, it won't make it through the mesh.

--

A Quick Note About Topics -
We've had some epic threads recently that read a little bit like "War & Peace". If there is an aspect of a post that you want to discuss further, it is best to start a new topic (_not_ just give your post a new Subject line). Keeping on topic also makes it easier for finding information in the archives. It's also a good point at which to ask, "is this _really_ an RBW topic...?"

Rivendell Model Pages on Cyclofiend.com -

As you know, there are pages for the following models:
Atlantis - http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/atlantis
Bleriot - http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/bleriot
Bombadil - http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/bombadil
Hilsen - http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/hilsen
Quickbeam - http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/quickbeam
Rambouillet - http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/rambouillet
Romulus & Redwood - http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/romulus

which have pulled together flyers, tidbits and scans, as well as aggregated all the Gallery listings for those models.

John over at RBW had found a "draft" copy of the never-published Redwood flyer, which now has a page in the Romulus/Redwood section:

http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/romulus/redflyer

Request for materials -
The only thing I thought I had but can't seem to find is a flyer specific to the Redwood - It may have been a Reader or Catalog thing, but if anyone has a separate Redwood (or Romulus...or even any other model listed above) flyer that doesn't appear, please contact me - a scan would be appreciated, or you can mail it and I'll return it to you.

I do have flyers for Rivendell (custom) Frames and the color "poster-type" insert which was included with that. Another project in the queue...

Also in the "to-do" stage is a Saluki page, but I've only seen (and currently have) a pdf of that flyer. Did anyone ever see a Glorius/Wilbury flyer, other than the Reader annoucements?

And, if anyone has early bicycle-only flyers from the Pre-RR#24 days, please contact me.

I'll usually announce RBW page updates to the list, and put them here as well:

More General Topics (From Previous Issues)
============================

- Broader technical questions and non-Riv stuff are well covered by the iBob list, the 650B list and others hosted by alex wetmore on bikelist.org - http://www.bikelist.org - This is also where you can find the pre-March '07 archives to the RBW list. Peter White runs the "Bicycle Lifestyle" google group, which is here - http://groups.google.com/group/bicyclelifestyle

- Resources get put onto the RBW-Owners-Bunch pages here:
http://groups.google.com/group/rbw-owners-bunch/web
Most are either mirrored or enhanced here: http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw

- The Official RBW Gallery is on Flickr -
http://www.flickr.com/groups/rivendell
Of course, my feelings get hurt if you don't send photos to the Current Classics (or other) Galleries ;^) http://www.cyclofiend.com/cc

- Our FAQ continues to exist! The FAQ has one Q which was A'd enough.
http://groups.google.com/group/rbw-owners-bunch/web/rbw-group-requests

- Posts from new members (or old members changing their email) are moderated. So, it means that if someone joins, their first messages will have to get my (or an acting list admin's) OK before being sent to everyone. If you want to bypass this or speed it up a bit, send me an email so I know you aren't a spammer.

- Posts to the list are by default distributed to everyone. That means if you wish to make a private comment, you need to change the "TO:" information. It's also easy to make that mistake, so please don't jump on folks who do so.

- Bug reports for the Rivendell website should be sent to rbw-feedback@610systems.com
You should include the browser, system and specific issue in the email.

Statistics & Housekeeping
============================

List began: March 26, 2007
Members: 789 (Up from 731 on 9/5/08)
Activity: Medium activity (Unchanged)
Last month - August 2008 - was our highest traffic month so far, with 979 posts.

In addition to email delivery, the list can be viewed via the web at -
http://groups.google.com/group/rbw-owners-bunch

If you wish to turn off or restart email delivery, change to digest mode, update your profile or make other changes, simply log in at the page above and make the changes you desire.

Unsubscribing is as easy as an email. But, don't send it to the group or to me - All posts (including this SOTL message) contain a footer with the appropriate address.

The Rivendell Owners Bunch list is "dedicated to the discussion of Rivendell Bicycles and products, you don't need to own one - just an interest in RBW designs is enough to join in. Ride reports encouraged, as is a respectful, supportive and polite tone in all posts. This group is not endorsed by Rivendell Bicycle Works."

As stated, this list is a discussion of things Rivendellian in nature and is not associated with Rivendell Bicycle Works or its employees and staff. If you have specific questions for Rivendell Bicycle Works regarding customer service or other issues, you should contact them directly.

============================
Ending Note
============================

I'd be more than happy to continue the discussion on any of the topics mentioned above, but in the interest of clarity, it might make sense to either email me directly or to create a new topic thread specific to your comment.

Thanks again for your contributions and enjoyment of the list.

Your list admin,

-- Jim
