HI,
I'm
the original owner of this '87 Specialized Stumpjumper Comp. I bought
it in 1987 when I was an employee of a Portland Oregon area bike
shop. I road it more in the mountains in the early days then I do
now. Most everything on it is original except for the Brooks saddle,Ergon
grips, water bottle cages (Specialized carbon), and the pedals.
Today, with the Schwalbe Big Apple tires on it, I use it as an in
town cruiser for fun and exercise. I tried, but couldn't get Fat
Franks to fit in the rear. My renters insurance paid for this bike
after my '86 Stumpjumper was stolen in a home burglary (a Specialized
getaway). I was able to convince them that the "replacement" for
my lugged '86 Stumpjumper was an '87 Stumpjumper Comp. Since I was
able to get it on the shop employee discount from Specialized, I
was able to convince them. A great bike. I'm glad I hung on to it,
unlike a few others I had from that era and older that I still kick
myself for selling

note - Tom's posting got stuck in a data tangle, and as a result
wasn't posted immediately. He sent me this addendum to his original
post which I'm including.)
Jim,
after reviewing some of the other posts in the "current classics"
I thought I would detail the original components on my '87 Stumpjumper
Comp that I sent to you a few weeks back as it might be of interest
to your viewers. I pulled these specs out of the '87 Specialized
catalog that I still have. The
suggested retail for this bike in 1987 was $835. For comparison,
the Stumpjumper Team came in at $1,535.
