Howdy,
This
is my 1987 Hetchins Magnum Opus (23 ¸ inch) built up with mostly
vintage French bits (and a little help from Nitto). I got the frame
from an amazing seller in Florida last February. It appears that
the frame was never built up, making this something of a Corvette
in a barn story. I had been slowly collecting the components over
the previous year, waiting for the perfect frame to come along.Ê
When the frame showed up on ebay, I threw everything I had at it.
This
bike sees plenty of action here in Austin, TX. It's plenty comfortable
for long rides and I may well do my next 200 K on it. Thanks to
Phil and Jay at Freewheeling (best shop in town for the discerning
retro-grouch) for doing the build and to Brian for doing the photo-shoot.
The
breakdown:
Ideale 90CR Speciale Competion saddle
Nitto 83 seatpost
Nitto Noodlebar, 42cm and Technomic stem
Brooks bar wrap w/Soma plugs
Mafac Racer Brakes w/Toei straddle carrier from Jitensha
Simplex retro-friction shifters
Simplex Super LJ front derailleur
Huret Duopar rear derailleur
Maxi-Car 36 hole bolt-on hubs, 126 rear spacing (I carry a special
13mm/17mm cone wrench to change flats)
Velocity Dyad rims (kept the stickers on since they match the color
scheme)
Ruffy Tuffy's 700c x 30mm
TA Pro 5 vis cranks, 48/34
Shimano Ultegra pedals (I've got TA pedals, but finally went clipless
last Spring)
Suntour Winner 7 speed freewheel 13,14,16,18, 21,26,32 (We've got
a few hills around town.)
Phil Wood bottom bracket
TA front rack and bar mounted bottle cage
Nitto type R cage on down tube
The frame came with a Shimano track headset installed, otherwise
I'd have gone Chris King.
It's
a pretty eclectic mix of modern and retro. My goal was to keep it
completely Campy free.
Thanks
for looking!
