Montagner
(Mon-tan-yair) Time Trial Bike
Completed
restoration of a Montagner low profile time trial bike. The bike
over the years had been modified, repainted and long since depleted
of its original parts by previous owners Š it had originally been
owned by Madonna Harris (Commonwealth Games and WorldÕs medallist).
The
attempt was to restore the entire bike and make it look as though
it had been built up and stored all these years. Montagner frames
were built by Luigi Montagner, whose claim to fame was being builder
to the Czech and Polish national teams in the 80s.
Many
of the original Gipiemme parts needed replacing, it didnÕt help
these components were rare in New Zealand. The search of eBay started
for new old stock (NOS) items - such as headset, shifters, bottom
bracket, rear derailleur, chain, also replacement handlebars, stem
and saddle. Over the next 6 months various parts made their way
to New Zealand, from Mexico, Poland, Italy, Holland and America.
These
bicycles (650c front wheel) were not that common in New Zealand
and following the UCI banning them for use in competition in the
early 1990Õs they were relegated to history.
So,
these bikes will remain as a snapshot of bike design in the 80Õs
with their quirky bent steel tubes.
