This is my wife Carol's favorite bike, a Taiwan-built lugged steel
Schwinn. It may be more of a "classic classic" than a current classic
but I find it aesthetically pleasing, I hope you do too!
I
keep trying to build up "nicer" bikes for Carol but she prefers
this one, so I figure it will be around for a while. We found the
bike on the side of the road and grabbed it out of someone's trash
heap. It was the model with Positron and the wheels were rusty chrome
steel. It cleaned up pretty well though, we both love the rootbeer
colored paint and the matching fenders. There is a gold pinstripe
that has mostly worn off but is a nice accent. My wife likes the
fancy rear reflector. She mostly uses it as transportation to the
beach or to the farmer's market.
I
replaced everything but the original headset, which cleaned up pretty
well--not much pitting inside it. Most of the components were borrowed
from an early '80's Fuji 10 speed:
Front
and Rear Derailleurs: Suntour AR
Crankset: Fuji/Sugino
Bottom Bracket: Fuji branded BB
Shifters: Suntour friction stem shifters
Brakes: Re-built Schwinn/Shimano brakes with new(er) pads
Rear Wheel: ATOM hub and 5 speed freewheel, Rigida rim, 27"
Front Wheel: Sunshine/Sansin hub, Araya rim, 27"
Tires: Cheap gumwall 27 X 1 1/4's
Stem/Bar SR/Schwinn with Schwinn grips
Saddle: Brooks B-72
Basket: Wald, of course
I
hope you enjoy this one--thanks.
